Did a bit of this...
...and that...
My mom came to visit, bearing Christmas gifts. We aren't traveling anywhere this year, so she brought Christmas to us. She resides at the beach, and made very clever and beautiful use of her surroundings to decorate our packages.
Inside this package, among MANY wonderful things, was some hand-dyed wool. The label indicates is was spun by The Green Mountain Spinnery, but I don't see this brand (Shepherd's Lamb) listed as one of their products. Not sure of the connection between the two, but it's a soft, strong yarn that I can't wait to use.
These skeins were dyed with natural colors. The one on the right was dyed using onion skins; the center skein was colored with cochineal dye. That sounds like a plant-based color, but it's actually an insect that lives on prickly pear cactus plants. I can't imagine how many of them it took to dye just one skein of yarn! Thanks, bugs!
I'm thinking of dyeing the bare skein - not sure what color, yet.
I gave my mom this "potato" rock - we call it that for its shape - it's a variety of smooth, flat rock. I crocheted a cover for it, almost like a little shower cap. It's a bit fanciful, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't know anyone else who can claim to have one.
The pattern was one of three different rock covers, and was in Crochet Today (Sept/Oct 2009). It's made with crochet thread, and took about 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, I've been playing around with the Royal Sisters' Grandma Twinkle pattern, working on something a bit different. Can't wait to show you later this week...

Not only have you been busy Erica, but you've been having fun too! I love the shower cap as you call it, on the rock too! The twinkle is looking good!
Now I have to ask my sister if she still has her pet rock so we can make a shower cap for it :) The yarn looks gorgeous! Is it as soft as it looks? Can't wait to see what you're making with the Twinkle pattern. Try to stay warm, though I am with you and prefer the winter. Summer is just smothering around here.
ohh i love the look of those stars in the bottom of the picture. What a beautiful present from your mum and such lovely colours poor bugs ;-) And the little shower cap is so very sweet what a unique present for her. You have been having fun, enjoy your new yarn ;-)) Dee
